I recently stumbled upon something truly bizarre that I had to take a second glance at, and then a third, and maybe even a fourth. I was scrolling through Amazon minding my own business when I came across a teen sex doll. What caught my eye and absolutely shocked me was that it was a teen girl that was made to look like an adult. At first, I thought that maybe I was seeing things or that it was just a regular sex doll and the listing was inaccurate. To confirm, I read through the entire description and reviews. Not only was it a real thing, but it was actually being sold on Amazon.
My initial thoughts were all over the place. I thought about how wrong it was to create something like this and make it available for purchase. What kind of message and future were we ushering in for our children? But then I thought about how principles of freedom of speech and expression applied in the face of this purchase—if it was available, did people have the right to buy it, even if it was morally questionable?
I took to the internet, hoping to find some clarity, and found some articles that discussed the matter. I learned that it was the right of the sellers to list these dolls, as per Amazon’s guidelines. However, it was suggested that the customers thought twice before making a purchase as such an act can encourage the objectification of young girls. I was relieved to read that the articles were not demanding it to be taken off Amazon’s site, but they were simply asking people to consider the repercussions of their actions before making a decision.
At the same time, I couldn’t help but think about some positive points. I mean, if conflicts of morality must be discussed and debated openly, should we not be supportive of such purchases to spark conversations? I read reviews as well, and found out that some people had indeed bought it to spread awareness. I was surprised by the sheer number of mixed responses in the reviews section.
Moreover, I thought about why people would even buy something like this. To say it offends my morals was an understatement. I think that it’s important to be unconventional and create discourse regarding unorthodox topics like this. If we don’t give people the right to choose what’s right or wrong according to their own opinion, and instead dictate our own beliefs, then where does this form of free speech and expression even stand?
Still, I can’t help but feel a little uncomfortable about the whole situation. Society remains largely conservative concerning topics such as gender and sexual issues, and yet these are the conversations we need to have. We can’t deny that people have their own interests, no matter how bizarre or controversial they are, and then just act like it doesn’t exist.
In the following four sections, let’s try to explore the subject further. Firstly, let’s look at the+controversies this product raises – not only legal, but, more significantly, ethical questions. Do we truly consider teen sex dolls appropriate? Are they just inanimate dolls that do not somehow normalize childlike sexuality? Is it in contradiction to accepted societal norms and principles of morality, sex toys or can it successfully challenge our preconceptions and spark a necessary discussion?
Next, let’s analyze the actual doll, assess its features and components, and consider its technical aspects. Is the bare minimum provided in terms of safety and quality, or is it a genuinely well conceived and produced product? Are the customers actually satisfied with what they receive, or do the dolls fail to live up to their expectations?
We can then go on to consider the customer base for these dolls. Who, in theory, would buy such a product? Is it a positive sign if someone has the courage to purchase it, or does it still encourage an unhealthy attitude towards teenage sexuality? Are customers of this product open to criticism, or do they retract away from any kind of conversation?
Finally, let’s consider the reaction this product has generated. Is it just shock and shock, or is it actually taken seriously and thoughtfully discussed and analysed? Are there many who still consider it a “taboo” subject, or do a large number of people actually understand and sympathise with it? Are there any writers, journalists and online sources that have released articles speaking on the matter?
These are important and difficult questions – all of them surrounded by different perspectives, popular opinions, individual preferences and, of course, the natural fear of change. I hope that, together, we can work to understand the many complexities of this teen sex doll phenomenon, spark fresh conversations and find meaningful solutions to the problem.
